Well this past weekend I had the “DREADED COMPUTER CRASH” when my system was running slow so I did a registry defrag, system defrag, etc… and then rebooted my machine… and guess what happened? NOTHING… it appears from the Error message windows wouldn’t start!

I tried everything, the startup repair couldn’t fix it, the computer wouldn’t boot into safe mode, wouldn’t boot to last known good configuration, couldn’t use system restore because it said I had NO restore point! Tried chkdsk and fixdsk from the command prompts and nothing worked, after hours of wasting time going through this cycle over and over trying to get something, anything to work…. I had to go with the last resort and that was to click the button to restore my system back to the factory defaults, which basically means your computer is just like it were brand new.

Now having your computer back to like it was when it was brand new may sound great, it really isn’t, because what that means is EVERYTHING you put on your computer since you bought it, (files, programs, pictures, video, files you purchased, ebooks, etc…) are all gone, as if they never existed.

If you have ever been as unfortunate and had this happen you know how hectic and frustrating it can be, especially if you don’t have anything backed up.

Now fortunately for me, I do have a external backup from Clickfree which I love, so all my files, photos, videos, and such are still there, the bad news was I had my backup set for weekly, thinking that was enough, and so now a weeks worth of spreadsheets that I did were gone, checking information gone (ie: checks wrote, cleared, etc…), and now hours spent to recreate that stuff. Yuk.

Not to mention that all the software I’ve installed and use daily from internet security to designing web pages, to keeping records, editing audio, etc…. all need to be re-installed, and while some what organized for this as I’ve had it happen in the past, it still means reinstalling the software from the disks, finding downloaded software from the external backup, (which by the way I can restore onto the computer), digging out product license keys so they work and I don’t have to buy them again, and the list goes on.

So it made for a good post on the importance of backing up and backing up frequently, I cannot even imagine having this happen and NOT having the files I did backed up. Now like I said years ago this happened but I wasn’t quite as “dependent” on my computer back then, but even then it was still a big hassle and often times you don’t realize you need something until you cannot find it.

Anyway, be sure to back up your computer on at least a weekly basis (as for me I’m going daily) and also going to backup to the clouds as they say as well, because if my external backup would fail, or something catastrophic were to happen and it got ruined, then I’d definitely not be a happy camper and probably wouldn’t be writing a blog post about it just a few short days later.

So back up your files often so if the dreaded computer crash ever comes knocking on your door, you can have at least some peace of mind.

Homestead - Homestead is very popular, and while they don’t offer a free version, they are simple to use, inexpensive, and have great customer service.  A website starter package is just $4.99 a month.

Yola - Another simple to use online site builder.  While the templates aren’t as nice in the free version as some of the other site builders, it is a good place to start.  I’ve created one a simple one to give you an idea here.

WebNode - Another coll free website builder that has some nice templates, simple to use, change the template headers with your own images.
